    If a radiator system and an underfloor heating system are both correctly designed and left running continuously, they can maintain similar room temperatures.

    The difference is that underfloor heating also warms the floor surface. Warm floors can make a room feel more comfortable, meaning many homeowners are happy with a slightly lower air temperature while maintaining the same level of comfort. In some cases, this can also reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the home.

    Efficient Heating Starts with Good Design

    Underfloor heating operates at much lower water temperatures than traditional radiator systems while still providing a comfortable indoor environment.

    From our own underfloor heating installations, we’ve seen well-designed systems maintain comfortable room temperatures of 21–22°C while averaging around 25°C water temperature during normal operation. Every property is different, and the required water temperature depends on factors such as insulation levels, heat loss, floor construction and floor finish. Some systems may need to operate at higher temperatures to achieve the same level of comfort.

    This ability to operate at lower water temperatures makes underfloor heating particularly well suited to air source and ground source heat pumps, allowing them to operate more efficiently.

    Is Now the Right Time to Upgrade Your Heating System?

    If you’re already replacing your flooring, renovating your home or building an extension, it can be an ideal time to install underfloor heating.

    If you’re also considering an air source or ground source heat pump, combining both projects can often be the most practical and cost-effective approach. Under the current UK VAT rules, qualifying heat pump installations and associated energy-saving materials supplied and installed as part of the same eligible project may also benefit from 0% VAT. This can make it an excellent opportunity to upgrade your entire heating system rather than carrying out the work in stages.
