Floor milling allows underfloor heating pipework to be installed into many existing floor types by cutting precision channels directly into the screed or concrete. Using specialist dust extraction equipment, the process creates minimal airborne dust and avoids the need for bulky overlay panels typically used in many renovation projects.

How floor milling works

Step 01: Survey and design
Every project starts by understanding your property. We assess the existing floor construction, discuss your heating requirements and design a pipe layout that delivers even heat throughout your home.
Step 02: Precision floor milling
Using specialist floor milling equipment we cut precise channels into the existing screed while industrial dust extraction keeps airborne dust to a minimum.


Step 03: Pipe installation
The underfloor heating pipe is carefully installed into the newly milled channels before being connected up to the manifold. Every circuit is pressure tested to ensure the system is ready for the next stage of the installation.

Is My Floor Suitable For Milling?
Suitable floor types

A dense structural floor made from cement, sharp sand and stone aggregate (small 10-20mm pebbles).
When cut or drilled, you’ll see the stones embedded throughout the concrete slab, giving it a dense, solid appearance.
Concrete
A layer of sand and cement laid over a concrete floor.
Screed contains no large stones, so when cut it has a more granular texture and is generally softer than concrete.
Screed
The majority of tiled floors are suitable for floor milling. As long as the tiles are properly bonded to the subfloor below.
Tiled floors
Not Suitable floor types
A typical suspended timber floor is made up from wooden joists then topped with floorboards or chipboard.
How to identify one:
* Sounds hollow when walked ob or stamped on.
* Usually has floorboards or chipboard beneath the floor finish
* Common in older properties.
If this is the case, we would use a different method to install the UFH.
Timber suspended floors
A thin layer doesn’t automatically mean the floor can’t be milled. If it’s well bonded to the subfloor below it, it effectively behaves as one solid slab.
The issue is thin, weak or un-bonded screeds, as these can break up during the milling process.
If a thin un-bonded layer is present then we would recommend a different underfloor heating installation method.
Floors with insufficient depth
Weak or poorly mixed sand and cement screeds can be too weak to withstand the milling.
If this is found then we would recommend removing the screed and installing a different type of underfloor heating.
Extremely weak sand and cement screeds
